The Family Outreach Centre
Operating from the Dunfield Park Community Centre, the Family Outreach Program (a Brighter Futures Program) offers a variety of educational opportunities for parents and children ages 0 - 6 years. While parents are encouraged to participate in play activities with their children, they can also avail of the many parenting programs offered on a rotating basis. Programs run one session per week for 4 - 12 weeks and include topics such as: How to Talk so Kids will Listen, Childsafe, Budgeting, and First Aid Training.
After School Program
The After School Program is for kids ages seven to thirteen years of age. This daily program takes place each weekday after Homework Haven from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The After School Program gets kids involved in playing on computers, with games, crafts, and/or cards. If you would like to volunteer for this program please call the Community Centre at 634-4691.
Healthy Baby Club
A program designed to assist low-income pregnant women. It offers friendly support, prenatal and nutrition education, food supplements, breast-feeding information, cooking sessions and home visits. The program's goal is to ensure both mother and child are given the most opportunities to attain their full potential, physically, emotionally and mentally. The Healthy Baby Club is operated by a facilitator from Brighter Futures and assisted by local resource mothers.
Youth Sports Night
Youth Sports Night is a program geared towards youth ages thirteen to eighteen. Each Tuesday night from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Salvation Army Temple gymnasium there are sports available to participate in, like basketball, soccer, floor hockey and/or volleyball. If anyone is interested in participating or becoming part of the committee please contact the Community Centre at 634-4691.
Computer Classes
Unfortunately due to the lack of interest last year in the Computer Classes anyone who is interested in learning about computers whether it is Internet, Word Processing or Resumes must call the Dunfield Park Community Centre to register at 634-4691. Computers are available from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on the third floor of the Community Centre.
Look Good Feel Good Club
A great social program aimed at women ages 18 and up. The Look Good Feel Good program is held one evening every week. A variety of topics are often scheduled - nutrition, weight control, self-esteem, smoking cessation, cooking, and many more. Any topic is an opportunity for discussion. Guest speakers range from the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary talking about safety in the home, to a beautician providing a complete hair and beauty makeover.
Seniors' Socials
Within the community one of its most valued resources are its seniors. The centre believes the knowledge of Newfoundland's past, culture and lifestyle is a valuable part of the community and having seniors participate in the centre's activities provides the opportunity to pass this history along to the next generation. There are a variety of events and functions held for seniors which give them a chance to socialize together. Monthly socials and outings are held, complete with games, prizes and luncheons.
Gathering Girls/Boys Breakout
This program is designed to give kids (ages 7 to 12) an opportunity to just be themselves. The program is held on Wednesday nights for the girls and Monday nights for the boys at 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on their respective nights. This program has one of the highest attendance records with an average of 30 to 35 participants combined. If anyone is interested in participating or becoming part of the committee please contact the Community Centre at 634-4691.
Summer Recreation Program
Offered every summer, the program combines healthy living, with education and recreation. The children visit sites of interest and learning throughout Corner Brook. These field trips, coupled with games and sports, provide a broad range of opportunities for the children to learn and have fun.
Career Corner
The Dunfield Park Community Centre has now added a program which will help residents in obtaining work. A representative from Ransier Consulting will be conducting educational sessions on self assessment, resumes, cover letters, etc. The program is directly designed to help residents obtain the necessary skills needed in today's workforce. If you would like to attend this program, call to register at 634-4691. Open to all ages starting October 13, 2004 at 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
